This is our second group of recipes for winter drinks. They are healthier than some other common versions and fun change from the common everyday drinks. Enjoy!

1- Hot Chocolate:
Profile: High calcium, gluten free
Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1 serving/cup
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- - 4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- - 1 cup 1% milk, divided
- - 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- - Pinch of ground cinnamon
Method:
1- Mix sugar, cocoa and 2 tablespoons cold milk in a mug until smooth. Heat the remaining milk in a small saucepan on the stovetop or in a 2-cup glass measure in the microwave until steaming hot but not boiling. Stir in the cocoa mixture and vanilla.
2- To froth the hot chocolate, whirl a whisk in it by rubbing your hands back and forth. (Alternatively, pour the hot chocolate into a blender, cover with the lid and a kitchen towel and blend until frothy.) Pour it back into the mug and sprinkle with cinnamon.

2- Spiced Hot Chocolate (super easy):
Profile: high calcium, gluten free
Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 4 cups prepared hot cocoa with 1% milk
- - 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- - 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- - 4 cinnamon sticks
Method:
1- Combine cocoa, nutmeg and chili powder.
2- Pour into mugs and serve with a cinnamon stick.
Nutritional value:
175 calories; 4 g fat ( 2 g sat , 1 g mono ); 12 mg cholesterol; 30 g carbohydrates; 8 g protein;1 g fiber; 161 mg sodium; 487 mg potassium.
3- Spiced Hot Cider:
Profile: Gluten free
Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 6 (each 3/4 cup)
Ingredients:
- 4 cups apple cider
- - 1 cinnamon stick
- - 5 whole cloves
- - 1/2 cup applejack, (apple brandy)
- - 2 tablespoons cinnamon schnapps
- - Cinnamon sticks, for garnish
Method:
1- Bring apple cider, cinnamon stick and cloves to a boil.
2- Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add applejack and schnapps. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and serve hot.
3- Alternative: for a non-alcoholic drink, replace the applejack and schnapps with 2 tablespoons of cinnamon-flavored syrup like Torani brand.
Nutritional value:
143 calories; 0 g fat; 0 mg cholesterol; 23 g carbohydrates; 0 g protein; 0 g fiber; 0 mg sodium; 0 mg potassium.
